Questions
License Renewal FAQs
How do I know which renewal course I need?
Pick the state where you hold your license. Each renewal course is built for one state's rules, so a course for another state won't count toward yours. Use the state picker at the top of this page and it will take you straight to the right course.
How many hours do I need to renew my guard license?
It depends on your state. Here's what our renewal courses cover:
- Alabama: 8 hours at each 2-year renewal
- Arizona (unarmed): 8 hours once per 4-year license
- California: 8 hours every year
- Denver, Colorado: 8 hours every year
- Georgia: 8 hours every year (our course covers the 6 non-firearms hours)
- Illinois: 8 hours every year
- Minnesota: 6 hours every year
- Oklahoma: 8 hours during each 3-year license
- Utah: 32 hours every 2 years
When should I take my renewal course?
Before your license or card expires. Give yourself time to finish the course and file with your state. Some states set a window, too. Arizona wants the refresher done within 90 days before you renew.
I'm licensed in Texas. Do I need a renewal course?
Not if you hold a Level II (unarmed) license. Texas doesn't require continuing education for Level II officers to renew. Commissioned (armed) officers and personal protection officers need 6 hours plus a firearms proficiency check before renewal.
My state isn't listed. What should I do?
Go to your state's page from the picker above. It covers what your state requires. Some states don't license guards at the state level at all, so there may be nothing to renew.

Renewing a whole team?
Keeping every guard's license current is hard when your roster spans more than one state. Defencify can set up the right renewal course for each guard and keep their certificates in one place.
