Getting Your Arizona Guard License

Five steps, start to finish.

Complete your 8-hour pre-assignment training. This course covers AZDPS's required curriculum for an unarmed Security Guard license. Going armed adds 16 hours of initial firearms training on top of this.

Get fingerprinted for your background check. AZDPS requires a fingerprint-based background check before it will issue your license, along with a separate fingerprinting fee.

Submit your license application to AZDPS. Pay the $50 unarmed license fee ($100 for armed) when you apply through the Security Guard and Private Investigator Licensing Unit.

Wait for AZDPS approval. Once your training, fingerprints, and background check are on file, AZDPS issues your Security Guard license.

Renew on your 4-year cycle. Unarmed guards complete an 8-hour refresher within 90 days before renewal. Armed guards also complete 8 hours of continuing firearms training every year in between.
