Getting Licensed as a Georgia Security Officer
Five steps, start to finish.
Complete your 24-hour unarmed classroom training. This course covers the Board's required curriculum for a Georgia unarmed security officer.
Add armed training if you'll carry a firearm. Armed officers complete an additional 15-hour handgun course and 2-hour shotgun course, each requiring an 80% passing score, on top of the unarmed curriculum.
Get fingerprinted and pass a background check. The Board requires two sets of fingerprints and a photo, run through GCIC, GBI, and FBI records.
Submit your registration to the Board. Pay the licensing fee set by the Board when you apply.
Keep up with continuing education. Security employees complete 8 hours per year (2 homeland security, 2 firearms, 4 industry-related) to stay current - your first renewal cycle is exempt.

How many training hours do I need to become a security officer in Georgia?
Unarmed security officers need 24 hours of classroom training, a requirement in place since January 2022. Armed officers complete that same 24-hour curriculum plus an additional 15-hour handgun course and 2-hour shotgun course, each requiring an 80% passing score.
