Understanding BSIS Annual Renewal Requirements

The California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS) requires all security guards to complete 8 hours of continuing education annually to maintain their security guard license in California. This training is mandatory to renew your California license and continue working legally as a security professional.

Annual Continuing Education Requirements:

  • 8 hours of BSIS-approved continuing education completed every year you hold an active guard registration
  • At least 2 of those hours must cover the appropriate use of force
  • The remaining 6 hours can cover mandatory or elective security topics, and may repeat prior material or introduce new topics

Guard Card Registration Renewal:

Your California guard card registration is valid for 2 years

Submit your renewal application at least 60 days before your card expires (BSIS returns applications submitted more than 120 days early)

On-time renewal fee: $44

Renewing within 60 days after expiration adds a $25 delinquency fee, for a total of $69

More than 60 days after expiration, you can no longer renew - you'll need to submit a new initial application instead

Working with an expired registration counts as unlicensed activity and can lead to disciplinary action

Visit the BSIS Security Guard Registration page for the current renewal application, forms, and any required documentation.
