Getting licensed
Getting Your Utah Security Officer License
Five steps, start to finish.
Complete the 8-hour basic security officer course. This covers DOPL's basic curriculum required for an unarmed Private Security Officer license.
Going armed? Add the 12-hour firearms course. Armed officers complete the 8-hour basic course plus a 12-hour firearms course - 20 hours of initial training total.
Pass your background check. DOPL requires a Utah BCI and FBI fingerprint-based check, with felony and prohibited-person disqualifiers for armed roles.
Submit your application to DOPL. Pay the $92 application-processing fee, plus a separate vendor-set fingerprint fee.
Renew every 2 years. Utah licenses expire November 30 of even-numbered years. Complete 32 hours of continuing education per cycle - 16 mandatory Core hours plus 16 Core-or-elective hours; armed and armored officers add 16 hours of firearms CE, delivered in 4-hour blocks every 6 months.
