Course Description: As a professional private security officer, you may have to deal with an opioid overdose situation someday. Indeed, you may have already experienced this. The purpose of this class is to help you understand what opioids are, how to recognize the signs of an opioid overdose, and how to respond in order to save a person's life. First, we have a short history of substance abuse, specifically opioids. You may be asking yourself, "Why are we discussing substance abuse in a class on Narcan® administration?" And that's a very good question! The answer is that every security officer needs to know what substance abuse is and how to recognize it in the workplace. A security officer may be the one most likely to come across substance abuse in the workplace, and also be the one most instrumental in stopping its use in their client's business. In order to play this important role, every security officer needs to know what to do when substance abuse is suspected. After we have discussed the dangers of opioid misuse, we discuss how YOU can use naloxone to deal with an opioid overdose and the after care that is needed. We include several videos showing how naloxone is administered, and we include an “Opioid Overdose Prevention Toolkit” in our Resources.
