• You must be at least 18 years old.
2. Criminal Background Check:
• Undergo a criminal history background check through the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). This involves submitting fingerprints via Live Scan.
3. Training Requirements:
• Initial Training (8 hours): Before applying, you must complete an 8-hour live instructor training course (not offered by Defencify) covering:

  • Power to Arrest (3 hours): Focuses on the responsibilities and ethics of a security guard, including the legal aspects of arrest.
  • Appropriate Use of Force (5 hours): Designed to introduce, instruct, and familiarize you with the appropriate use of force topics listed in section 7583.7 of the Business and Professions Code.


• Additional Training (32 hours): After receiving your guard card, complete an additional 32 hours of training:

  • Within 30 Days: 16 hours of mandatory courses.
  • Within 6 Months: 16 hours of elective courses.


• Annual Training (8 hours): Complete 8 hours of continuing education annually to maintain your registration.

Fees: Pay the required application fee of $60.


5. Live Scan Fingerprinting:
• Procedure: Complete the Live Scan fingerprinting process using the Security Guard Request for Live Scan Service form, ensuring the BSIS receives your background information promptly.
• Fees: Fees for Live Scan include a $32 DOJ fee, a $17 FBI fee, and a variable "rolling" service fee charged by the Live Scan operator.


6. Application Processing Time:
• Processing times can vary. Submitting your application online via BreEZe may reduce processing time by up to two weeks compared to mailing your application.
