In Utah, individuals seeking to become licensed security guards must adhere to specific requirements established by the Utah Division of Professional Licensing(DOPL). The state distinguishes between unarmed and armed private security officers, each with its own distinct criteria.
Unarmed Private Security Officer Requirements:
1. Age and Character:
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Demonstrate good moral character.
2. Criminal Background:
- No felony convictions.
- No misdemeanor convictions involving moral turpitude.
- Must not be prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition under federal law.
3. Training:
- Complete an 8-hour basic training course approved by DOPL.
4. Application Process:
- Submit a completed application to DOPL.
- Provide fingerprint cards for background checks.
- Pay the required application fee.
Armed Private Security Officer Requirements:
In addition to meeting all unarmed security officer requirements:
1. Age:
Must be at least 21 years old.
2. Additional Training:
Complete a 12-hour firearm training course approved by DOPL, which includes:
- 6 hours of classroom instruction on the legal use of firearms and safety.
- 6 hours of range instruction with practical firearm handling and qualification.
3. Firearm Proficiency:
- Demonstrate proficiency with the specific firearm to be carried on duty.
4. Application Process:
- Submit proof of completed firearm training.
- Provide additional fingerprint cards if not previously submitted.
- Pay the applicable fees for armed licensure.
Continuing Education:
• Unarmed Officers: Complete at least 32 hours of continuing education every two years, with a minimum of 16 hours being core education.
• Armed Officers: In addition to the 32 hours required for unarmed officers, complete at least 16 hours of continuing firearms education and training during each two-year renewal cycle (4 hours every 6 months).
