In Illinois, obtaining a security guard license, commonly called a Permanent Employee Registration Card (PERC), involves meeting specific criteria established by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR). The requirements differ slightly for unarmed and armed security positions.
Unarmed Security Guard Requirements:
1. Age and Citizenship:
o Be at least 18 years old.
o Be a U.S. citizen or possess legal authorization to work in the United States.
2. Education:
o Hold a high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate.
3. Language Proficiency:
o Demonstrate proficiency in English, both written and spoken.
4. Criminal Background:
o Have no felony convictions or disqualifying criminal history.
5. Training:
o Complete a 20-hour introductory security training course approved by the IDFPR. This course covers topics such as:
 Role and responsibilities of security personnel.
 Legal aspects of security work.
 Patrol and observation techniques.
 Report writing and communication skills.
 Emergency response procedures.
6. PERC Application Process:
o Fingerprinting: Submit fingerprints through a licensed vendor for a state and federal background check.
o Application Submission: Complete and submit the PERC application form, including personal information and proof of completed training.
o Fees: Pay the non-refundable application fee of $55.

Armed Security Guard Requirements:
In addition to the unarmed security guard requirements, armed security personnel must:
1. Age:
o Be at least 21 years old.
2. Firearm Training:
o Complete an additional 20-hour firearm training course approved by the IDFPR, focusing on:
 Legal use of firearms.
 Firearm safety and maintenance.
 Practical shooting exercises and qualification.
3. Firearm Control Card (FCC):
o Apply for an FCC, which permits carrying a firearm while on duty.
o Application Submission: Provide proof of completed firearm training and other required documentation.
o Fees: Pay the application processing fee of $75.

The Training you need to work as a licensed security officer in the state of Illinois.

The Illinois Department of Financial & Professional Regulation requires all Security Guards to be licensed in the State of Illinois and complete 20 hours of training. This online course is offered in partnership with P4 Academy who is licensed under the Illinois Department of Financial & Professional Regulation (license #102.000245).

To become a security officer in Illinois requires two things, you must obtain a Permanent Employee Registration Card (PERC) and complete security officer training.


How it works:
1.    Visit https://idfpr.illinois.gov/search.html?q=perc&contentType=everything  to submit your PERC application online. 
2.    Complete the entire application,
3.    Obtain fingerprints from an approved vendor or in the manner listed on the application.
4.    Submit completed application, fingerprints, and pay the non-refundable fee. 
5.    Complete 20 hours of security officer training.
Do not delay applying for the PERC as you must have it in your possession before you can begin work.

 

The following are the minimum applicant requirements:·       

·        U.S. Citizenship or valid Green Card
·        Live Scan fingerprints
·        High school diploma or G.E.D.
·        Drug screening and background check
·        Strong communication skills; spoken and written English
·        Solid work record
·        Reliable, ethical, hard-worker


Course Details:
This course will equip students with the necessary knowledge and requirements for an entry-level unarmed security guard position. Course material will go over Illinois state laws and help students obtain the skills necessary to be successful as a security officer.
